Crime:
Murder of his father Joseph Oldroyd, aged 60 to 70.Elizabeth Oldroyd, Joseph's wife and Benjamin's mother, testified that her husband had suicidal tendencies and that she believed he had hanged himself. Benjamin Oldroyd protested his innocence until the end and physically resisted being hanged.

Murder of John Moore at Southowram, near Halifax.In September 1761 Harger attempted to dig his way out of York Castle; was found several yards underground having dug so far with only a knife and a shoemaker's hammer; was afterwards chained to a wall with his accomplices: John Wilson, William Andrews and George Cox.
